However, as great as all the technology is, it can make it difficult to stop using your baby monitor.
Although there is no set age to which you should stop using a baby monitor, it’s recommended that you do so eventually to help you (as the parent) get a better night’s sleep. However, others stated that at the age of four years old is a good time to stop using a baby monitor because it makes sleep training your toddler (especially when they are in their big bed) much easier.

Depending upon the size of your house, you may sleep too far away from your child’s room to hear them. Therefore, it may be a good idea to continue using it if they are still young so that they can alert you when they are upset.

Particularly for toddlers, if they are in a “big bed” (i.e. not a cot), they can easily climb out of their bed. Therefore, when it comes to sleep training, you’ll want to ensure they are sleeping and not playing in their room.
3. Frequent Nightmares or Sleepwalking
If your child has been having nightmares or has started to sleepwalk, you may want to pay particular attention to the baby monitor. For example, if your baby is having a nightmare, they may be terrified and require urgent assistance. Alternatively, if they begin to sleepwalk, it can be potentially dangerous depending upon the layout of their room.
4. Are You Travelling or On Holiday?
If your child is trying to sleep in an unfamiliar location in their travel cot, they may find it difficult to get to sleep. Whether you are waking up to every noise they make or you have the urge to check the monitor, you inevitability end up losing sleep. Therefore, with the monitor out of the equation, you should be able to catch up on your sleep.
2. You Are Addicted To Checking It
Baby monitors are a great invention but they are also a big distraction that can become very addictive. For example, you may find yourself looking at it every 30 seconds to check on your child’s sleep or movements.
3. They Are Distracted By It
As your child gets older, they’ll begin to recognise certain objects in the room and the baby monitor that looks at them is a great example. This, therefore, poses an issue because they may begin to get distracted by it. However, to overcome this, you could try to place your monitor in a new location that’s more hidden from your child’s view.
4. Not All Noises Need Your Attention
Whether your child has turned over or is snoring, these noises don’t always need your attention. By leaving your monitor on, you are more than likely going to wake to these noises, which interferes with your own sleep.
5. You Are Close Enough To Their Room
If your child is in the next room, if they need to alert you, you’ll more than likely hear them crying. You can even open your bedroom door as well as your child’s door to ensure any noise travels for extra peace of mind.
How To Do Away With The Monitor
If you are ready to stop using your baby monitor, you may find it quite difficult at first. Therefore, we would recommend that you do so gradually and the best way of doing this is to switch off the receiver or smartphone application but still have the monitor running. This way, you know you can check up on your baby at any period if you feel you need to. After a few days or weeks of doing this gradual approach, you may feel that you can stop using the monitor altogether.
Whether you turn your baby monitor off at 6 months or at any other age, the decision is completely up to you.
